Privacy Policy

StudentNC (“StudentNC,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates studentnc.com, a classifieds and community platform for international students in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), covering a marketplace, roommate matching, flat listings, and job postings. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

1. Information we collect

Account information: when you register, we collect your name, email address, password, and WhatsApp number. Depending on the section of the site you use, you may also provide your university, nationality, a profile photo, and other listing-specific details (for example, budget or move-in preferences for Roommates listings, or business details if you list as a real estate agency).

University verification: if you verify a university email address to get the “Verified Student” badge, we store that address and the fact that it was verified. The badge and your university are shown on your profile and listings.

Listing content: anything you submit when posting a Marketplace item, Roommates listing, Flat, or Job (including text, photos, price, location, category, and any phone, WhatsApp, or email contact details you add) is stored and shown publicly on the site as part of that listing, so other users can contact you directly.

Public profile: your profile page shows your name, profile photo (if you added one), your Verified Student badge and university (if verified), when you joined, and your live listings.

Listing statistics: when someone opens a listing or taps one of its contact buttons (WhatsApp, Request a viewing, Apply, Call, or email), we count it anonymously so we and the people who post listings can see how listings perform. We record the listing, which button was used, the page language, and the date. We do not store your IP address or browser details. To avoid counting the same visit twice, we keep only a one-way code made from those details and a value that changes every day; it cannot be turned back into your IP address or used to identify you. Visits by the listing’s own poster and by site administrators are not counted.

Messages you send us: when you use our Contact form, the “Report a listing” form, or the job listing removal/update form, we receive the details you enter (such as your name, email address, optional phone number, the listing link, and your message) by email so we can respond.

Business contact details in job listings: some job listings are shared from public job sites such as İş Kıbrıs. They include the employer’s business name, email address, and phone number as the employer published them there. An employer can ask us to remove or update such a listing at any time using our removal request form.

Usage and technical data: like most websites, our hosting, security, and analytics providers (including our web host, Cloudflare, our caching system, and Google Analytics through Google Site Kit) automatically collect standard technical information such as IP address, browser type, device type, and pages visited. Some listing pages show an embedded Google Map of the listing’s location; when the map loads, Google may receive your IP address and browser details.

Cookies: we use cookies for essential site functions (keeping you signed in, remembering your language and filter preferences, and a short-lived security check that confirms your browser can load the site), and, where enabled, for analytics. You can control cookies through your browser settings.

2. How we use your information

  • To create and manage your account and authenticate you when you sign in
  • To display your listings, profile, and the contact details you added, so other users can contact you about your listings
  • To verify your university email address and show your Verified Student badge
  • To show the people who post listings, including real estate agencies, how their listings perform (anonymous view and contact-button counts), and to improve StudentNC
  • To enforce our Terms of Service (for example, limiting one active roommate listing per account, or verifying real estate agency status for Flats listings)
  • To answer your messages, reports, and removal requests, and to communicate with you about your account or listings
  • To maintain the security of the site and prevent fraud or abuse
  • To understand overall site usage so we can improve StudentNC (aggregated analytics)

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

3. Who we share information with

We share information only as needed to run the site:

  • Other users: your listing content, the contact details you added to a listing, and your public profile.
  • Employers and listing posters you contact: StudentNC has no in-site messaging. The contact buttons on a listing (WhatsApp, Request a viewing, Apply, Call, or email) open your own WhatsApp, phone, or email app, and whatever you send goes directly to the employer or poster. We do not see, receive, or store those messages, your CV, or your application. WhatsApp’s own privacy policy applies to messages sent through WhatsApp.
  • People who post listings: anonymous totals for their own listings (number of views and contact-button taps, broken down by button, language, and date). These never identify individual visitors.
  • Service providers: our web hosting provider, our content delivery and security network (Cloudflare), our email delivery provider (Brevo), and Google (Analytics, Search Console, and embedded Maps), which help us keep StudentNC running reliably and securely.
  • Legal requirements: if required by applicable law, regulation, or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of StudentNC, our users, or the public.

4. Data retention

We keep your account information for as long as your account is active. Listing content is kept for as long as the listing remains published, plus a reasonable period afterward for record-keeping and dispute resolution. Anonymous listing statistics are kept for as long as we need them to report on listing performance; the codes used to avoid double counting change every day and cannot be linked back to you. Messages you send us through our forms are kept in our email for as long as needed to handle your request. When an employer asks us to remove a job listing that was shared from another site, we keep only the original listing’s reference number, so that it is not shared again. You can ask us to delete your account and associated personal data at any time (see “Your choices” below), subject to any legal or legitimate business reasons we may need to retain certain records.

5. Your choices

  • Access and correction: you can review and update most of your account and listing information, including your WhatsApp number and the contact details on your listings, directly from “My account” while signed in.
  • Deletion: you may request deletion of your account and personal data by contacting us at the email below. We will remove or anonymize your information except where we need to keep it for legal, security, or record-keeping reasons.
  • Listing removal: you can remove your own listings at any time from “My account.”
  • Employers: if a job listing shared from another job site belongs to your company, you can ask us to remove or update it using our removal request form.

6. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including access controls on our hosting environment, security filtering of traffic, and regular backups. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children’s privacy

StudentNC is intended for university students and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age required to attend university-level education in their jurisdiction.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.

9. Contact us

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how your information is handled, contact us at [email protected].
