Moving to TRNC: What I Wish I Knew Before Arriving

Landing in Northern Cyprus as a new student is exciting, but the first two weeks can feel overwhelming if nobody tells you what to actually expect.

Here’s what caught me off guard, and what I’d tell any student arriving for the first time.

Bring cash for your first few days

Not every landlord or small shop takes card payments right away, and setting up a local bank account takes time. Carry enough cash to cover a deposit, groceries, and transport for your first week.

SIM cards are cheap, but ask other students first

Each provider has different coverage depending on which town you’re in. Before committing to a plan, ask students at your own university which network works best near campus and student housing.

Don’t sign a flat contract without seeing it first

Photos can be misleading, and some listings online are outdated. If you can, arrange a viewing (in person or video call) before sending any deposit, and always confirm who the landlord or agency actually is.

Join your university’s student groups early

Most of the useful, practical advice, from which roommate situations to avoid to where to buy groceries cheaply, comes from other students, not official orientation materials.
