Renting your first flat is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make as a new student here. A few things made the process much smoother for me.

Decide: roommate flat or agency flat

Sharing with other students is usually cheaper and more flexible, while an agency-listed flat often comes furnished and pre-verified, but with a commission fee on top of rent.

Always clarify what’s included in the rent

Water, electricity, and internet aren’t always included. Ask directly, in writing if possible, so there are no surprises on your first bill.

Get everything in writing, even for informal roommate arrangements

A simple written agreement, even a text message confirming rent amount, deposit, and move-out notice, can save you a lot of stress later.

Location matters more than square meters

A smaller flat five minutes from campus is often more practical than a bigger one that costs you an hour of commuting every day.
